Leptin is the hormone responsible for regulating the metabolism and for the removal of fat from cells. Low levels of Leptin create a faster metabolism.

  • Drinking an ice cold glass of water can increase metabolic rate for up to 30 minutes. This is because the body needs to heat the water to a suitable temperature before it can be used. Staying hydrated will also help you to feel more alert. Dehydration thickens the blood and therefore increases the heart’s workload and causes fatigue.

  • Given the choice of sitting, or standing up, stand up every time. Standing up encourages the enzyme Lipase which is a key component in the body’s ability to burn fat.
  • Make sure you eat a good source of protein with every meal. Protein can increase your metabolic rate by up to 40%. This is because protein contains nitrogen which must be stripped and removed by the liver, making it take longer to digest as a result.
  • Whilst in the gym, eccentric loading can boost your metabloism for up to 72 hours. Eccentric loading involves lowering a weight back to the start position of an exercise, slowly, and under control. This increases the breakdown of muscle tissue so more calories are used during the repair process.
